Don't Pry, Just Pray!

Photo (c) Curtis Alexander
Today's Bible verses;
Proverbs 11:13
New King James Version
13 A talebearer reveals secrets,
But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.
And...
1 Corinthians 2:2
New King James Version
2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

I'm sure you have noticed that information is super easy to obtain these days.

Big names being exposed as frauds.

Interpersonal relationships falling apart.

Searching for answers on the internet.

Getting hallucinatory responses from generative AI platforms.

The search companies and social media giants all seem to push this AI stuff on us, as if we need to know.

It almost feels like we should be entitled to all the information.

There are entire markets that exist for the selling or buying information.

But I have developed a "special ability" over the years.

I developed this ability as a young adult while working in the retail industry and in the Christian ministry. I have gladly carried it into my middle age years. It took time for me to learn it.

What ability is that? Well,

I have the ability to not need to know everything. It's like the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:2... he decided "not to know" anything about the Corinthians except Christ Jesus the person and His death, burial, and resurrection.

The faithful person conceals matters that are unfit for public consumption. This is according to Solomon in Proverbs 11:13. (quoted at the top of this article)

Discretion is a Biblical and needed quality in today's world. The Bible says:
Proverbs 1:4 NKJV
To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion—

Proverbs 2:11 NKJV
Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you,

Proverbs 3:21 NKJV
My son, let them not depart from your eyes— Keep sound wisdom and discretion;

Proverbs 5:2 NKJV
That you may preserve discretion, And your lips may keep knowledge.

The Bible word "discretion" comes from a Hebrew word that, according to Strongs has both negative and positive connotations to it. Strongs says:

a plan, usually evil (machination), sometimes good (sagacity):—(wicked) device, discretion, intent, witty invention, lewdness, mischievous (device), thought, wickedly. (Source blueletterbible.org)

Dictionary.com tells us discretion means to be "discreet." So when I looked up "discreet" it defined the word this way:

judicious in one's conduct or speech, especially with regard to respecting privacy or maintaining silence about something of a delicate nature; prudent; circumspect. (Source dictionary.com)

The Bible uses this word in a positive way (as seen above), but also in a negative way, to describe wicked devices and evil plans. (See Prov 14:17; Prov 24:8 as examples)

The Bible points out some people can and do abuse discretion and secrecy, sadly and tragically. They hide their evil actions, things that should be brought to light. We know this all too well in the modern age. All we have to do is look at the news.

But this does not mean we should throw discretion out altogether. Used responsibly and righteously, the Bible says "discretion will preserve you" (Prov 2:11) and your close connections.

So this is why I don't pry for information. Unless someone volunteers info to me on their own, I don't ask for details. I only ask for relevant info, such as "will you be at church Sunday?" or "have you seen my latest article?" etc.  Also, I use discretion when sharing with others. I may respect and love my colleagues and friends. But that doesn't mean I need to share everything with them. Our human nature tends to want to know unneeded things, and pass unneeded judgements.

This special ability:

1.Respects the privacy of those around us.

2.Protects your own household's privacy.

3.Protects your mind from information overload, including the doom-preachers of the news. (I have news for them, God's word is more powerful than theirs!)

4.Frees your mind to excel at the things that matter. For me this means knowing God's Word, loving people, teaching God's Word, writing, photography, video editing, and photo editing. (etc.)

I don't need to know everything about friends and family and church goers, and neither do you. Why? Because God already knows everything! He is the judge and will make His call in His time. And He is always on time.

Now, I do NOT believe in living oblivious to the world either.
I keep an eye on the news, kind of like a speedometer or temperature gauge. But I don't spend too long on it. These commentators (both conservative and liberal) want to, for their own reasons, paint the most depressing picture they can in order to devalue their political opponents. But the side-effect of this is that the listeners can be depressed and discouraged.

So I deliberately limit my interactions with the news. I spend more time in God's word, which is always relevant to the current world situation. God's Word is alive and powerful!

Hebrews 4:12
New King James Version
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I also limit my interactions with people who share too much.
I love them in the Lord, don't get me wrong. But I have a mission to share the Gospel of the Kingdom, not to learn all the nitty gritties of someone's life. That's none of my business.

Also, some people use prayer requests as a way to pry for information. I don't agree with that. As a pastor myself, I will pray for people one on one as they ask me to. And I will listen to them. I accept whatever information they share and then I keep it confidential. I then pray for them based on The Holy Spirit's leading and also based on what info the church goer volunteered to me. And that's it! I don't need to know anything else!

If someone asks for prayer for their health but does not volunteer any specifics, then I rely on the Holy Spirit to guide my prayers for them. I don't pry for details. Now, some others in the wider Christian world might pry. But we don't do that at our church. Instead we pray in Jesus Name, knowing that God knows the details and will handle all the parts we ourselves don't know.

Remember too that secret knowledge was the original idol... the original temptation of Eve.

Genesis 3:4-5 NKJV
4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Satan tricked her into thinking that God was hiding secret conspiracy knowledge from her and that she deserved to know. In reality, God gave Adam and Eve all they needed. They knew life and they knew God. That was all they ever needed to know. They never needed to know the "knowledge of good and evil." But Satan was able to deceive Eve with his lie. Adam was not deceived but commited and even worse sin than Eve. He committed high treason against God the King, and willingly ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
So Thank God that Jesus Christ came to save us all from Adam's betrayal!

1 Corinthians 15:22
New King James Version
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

Satan still tries to tempt us as Christians to want to know more than what our "security clearance" allows for. That's how gossip starts. Christians (very much like non-believers) are tempted to pry for undeserved info. It's info they have no right to. But somehow, they think they need to know it.

No, you and I don't need to know.

If someone is struggling with health, don't pry for details. Just pray. And definitely don't spread "your theories" about their health. That's called a "rumour". It's what gossips do. The Bible tells us not to gossip. (See 1 Timothy 5:13)

If someone is in between jobs, don't pry, just pray!

If a family appears to be having internal problems, don't pry, just pray!

Even as a pastor, I don't pry for unvolunteered information from our church attenders. The truth is, some secrets are meant to be kept. Keeping them means we protect ourselves and others from unfair judgements and misguided criticisms that have no place. It protects us and others from mischief and meddling.

So if you want to help others,
1. be a good listener. You can show care and empathy without knowing all the details.

2. Don't repeat anything they share with you in confidence to others.

3. Don't pry for info, just pray for them in Jesus' Mighty Name... Jesus knows all there is to know.

4. Don't misuse prayer as a tool for prying or digging. Example: Don't ask someone about the details of their marriage with the guise of "wanting to pray for them". You don't need details. God already has all the details. Just pray. Praying in faith means you trust God with the details, in Jesus' name.

5. Rely on the discernment of the Holy Spirit. He will guide you in your prayers in ways people cannot. See John 14:26 as an example.

6. Protect your own family or household by practicing discretion in public. Don't overshare. Doing so will stop people from being able to pass foolish judgements on you or your loved ones. It stops the giving of "free advice."

7. Don't spend time with gossips. Don't participate with them even if they are family. The Gossip's only purpose is to spread sensational rumours around to entertain the listeners at the expense of the person being gossiped about. They might feign "concern" for the person, but really, it's an addiction. They are addicted to false information.

8. If you want to know how someone is doing, ask them yourself. The person will tell you as much as they want to. Avoid going to their acquaintances and friends for information. This is how rumours and gossip can be fostered. Now there are some exceptions to this. For instance, a husband might be out alone shopping, and an acquaintance might see him and ask how his wife is doing. In that case, it's perfectly reasonable for the husband to reply with limited information such as "she's doing well thank you." But I find people in general (believers and non-believers) run around or behind the person in question too often. We need to create more direct paths. Go straight to the person, not to their acquaintances. Even Jesus says it: If someone wrongs you, go to them alone in private.

 Matthew 18:15
New King James Version
15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

See that? The goal, according to Jesus is NOT to spread the offense around. The goal is to preserve your relationships! Gossips aren't interested in preserving anything. They only care about entertaining themselves with the latest tidbits, whether they be true or not! So if your friend or spouse or someone else wrongs you, Jesus says to go to them alone. That's your first move. Jesus gives further instructions in case they don't hear you. He says to take one or two witnesses with you. But none of Jesus' instructions involve you gossiping to everyone about the wrong you suffered. So don't play the victim to everyone. The first action should always be, if possible, a one on one private conversation, and the goal should always be preservation of the relationship. This is according to Christ.

9. Briefing and Debriefing are different from gossiping. Briefing and debriefing are military terms that describe military meetings and their operations. Only those who are in the unit are allowed to know the details. Briefing happens before an operation commences. It allows all the members of the concerned unit to know what the objective is, and what the expected outcomes are supposed to be. Debriefing is when the unit sits down after the operation to discuss what happened. Were the objectives reached? How smooth was  the operation? What areas can we improve in?
All of this is necessary and it must be kept discreet.
We use these terms in Christian leadership ministry as well.  I will likely discuss these concepts in a separate article at a later date. In the Christian ministry, we use these concepts of briefing and debriefing to help our leadership all be on the same page, and to clarify our Biblical goals in the church, including sharing the Gospel of the Kingdom. We don't share all these details with non-leadership. That's called "discretion".  The main difference between gossip and briefing is that briefing is true and contained to a small responsible group of mature Godly leaders. Gossip is not true. If anything, it feeds on partial truths and blows things out of proportion. Gossip is also not contained at all. This means it spreads to anyone and gets out of control.

So briefing and debriefing are true, controlled, contained leadership sessions meant to better the whole unit (or in this case, the local church). They depend on truth and are guided by The Bible (in a Christian context). Therefore, the whole church benefits from the results of these discreet  meetings. The whole local church grows in maturity and godliness. Briefing and debriefing are mission-focused meetings.

But in contrast, Gossip is false, uncontrolled, and uncontained. Gossip feeds on falsehoods and partial truths. It speculates and distorts. And it's all at the expense of an unknowing victim.
It hurts the reputations of one or more individuals without them even knowing. It's more than unconstructive. It's actually destructive. And it spreads quickly like a damaging wildfire. Gossip is people-focused, and not mission-focused.

Paul had a mission, to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. In order to do this, he determined "not to know" anything else among the Corinthian church.

I hope these thoughts will help. God bless!

Photo Story: The Stone Pillar in a Local Stream

Sixteen years ago, I took a photo of something unexpected and unusual: a pillar made out of random rocks, perfectly balanced one on top of another. Here's the image (along with a Scripture) and the story:
Photo and design (c) Curtis Alexander

Way back in 2010, in the town of Newmarket, ON, someone painstakingly took the time to very carefully balance a mysterious stack of stones in a quiet stream. There was no event I know of, no special occasion. It was simply a random stone pillar in the middle of a calm and peaceful park, placed very intentionally by an unknown person.
By the time I walked by the stream, it was there, standing by itself, the product of someone's patience and precision. There was no sign of the person who made it.
With photographic instinct, I snapped this shot you see in the poster. At the time, I did not know what I might do with the image.
Now, 16 years later in 2026, my photo serves as a visual aid for my Tuesday night church lessons on Jacob's anointed stone pillar which represents Christ Jesus. 🙂 I speak regularly on Tuesday nights at our church, giving the congregants interactive Scripture studies. I rotate my Bible topics every week. On the nights when I share about Genesis, I will be using this graphic for the next little while.
Jacob practices the first instance of anointing in the Bible here:
Genesis 28:18
New King James Version
18 Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.
That anointed stone pillar is prophetic of Jesus Christ the Head of the Body and the Chief Cornerstone. He is the Pillar of Truth. He is "Christos" or "the Anointed One."
God later reminds Jacob about his anointed pillar.
Genesis 31:13
New King James Version
13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ”
Genesis 31:13 is the first time in Scripture we see the word "anointed". And God is referencing Jacob's actions in Genesis 28:18. And all of it ultimately points to Jesus Christ the Anointed One, the Messiah!

Recognizing Opportunities to Rest

Healthy Boundaries in The Lord

I am a middle aged bivocational pastor (I am also full time department manager for a store.) I have been at these aspects of my calling for years. And unlike my younger self, I find I am not able to ignore the need for restorative rest and time alone. I have started seeing the healthy boundaries of Jesus in scripture. He needed rest time, alone with the Heavenly Father. So do we, His followers. He was God, yet was He was also human. He modeled an ideal lifestyle.

I have realized the need to stop pushing myself and rest sometimes. Pray often. Talk to the Lord Jesus. Jesus Himself was an example of balance when dealing with the demands of ministry and the need to rest and recover. Also He dealt with grief.
In the passage below, Jesus had just heard about the death/execution of John The Baptist, His cousin. He was clearly in need of time alone with the Heavenly Father to grieve and feel sorrow. Humans need to process and feel their sorrow, not hide and deny it. We, like Jesus, need to submit our soulish feelings to the Holy Spirit, and live by the Spirit of God, and by the Living Word of God. But how can we submit our feelings if we do not first feel those feelings? This is done by getting away from the crowds, from ministry, from work, and sometimes away from friends too.

I want to encourage you to read this passage. Most of the time, we focus on Jesus performing the miracles in this chapter, the multiplying of the bread and fish, and the walking on water later in the chapter. And those are very amazing feats of Jesus. No question.

But right now, I want to highlight how Jesus deals with His need for rest and His need to grieve the loss of John the Baptist.

Matthew 14:10-23
10 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.
11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12 Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.
15 When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”
16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.”
19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away.
23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.

Now I want us to zero in on Jesus' grief and also His need to be alone at this time. See how the crowds are oblivious to the loss Jesus feels. They just came to see the miracle worker, and get blessed with a healing. So He, in His sorrow, has true deep compassion on the multitude, and even corrects the disciples for suggesting that Jesus sends the crowds away. Jesus POSTPONES His own needs to care for the needs of the people. He even performs a miracle and divides 5 loaves and 2 fish endlessly until all 5000 men (plus women and children) were fed.

Jesus temporarily puts His own rest and alone time on hold to care for the sheep. His disciples probably could tell that Jesus was feeling the pain of loss. Sometimes, that is what ministry is. In my 22 years of involvement at Church and in ministry leadership, I have come to realize this. Pastors must sometimes (or often) POSTPONE their needs to look after the needs of God's flock. But that does NOT mean we are to NEGLECT our needs. God will care for us if we seek first His Kingdom (His country and rulership) and His righteousness in our lives first. We are to live selfless lives. All Christ-followers should follow this example of Jesus. And especially pastors.
But being selfless is NOT the same as being reckless toward our own health and recovery periods.

Notice that Jesus merely postpones His alone time. He does not forego it, or neglect it or completely ignore it. Pastoral ministry that is modeled after Christ Himself will often look the same.

Jesus had compassion, and healed the sick. He did not get annoyed at the crowds for following Him. He did not take the easy way out that the disciples had suggested- (to send the crowds away while they were hungry).
He remembered that these precious people were why He came to earth- He came to seek and save the lost and to tell them His main message: The GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.

Matthew 4:17
New King James Version
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Matthew 4:23 NKJV
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

He started off wanting to get alone with The Father (v13). Then the crowds came. After healing them, and feeding them, He did send them away. He sent His disciples away on a boat. He stayed alone. He rested and prayed to the Father in Heaven. He also likely felt the grief of losing John. In His alone time, He would have experienced rest, and recovery as He communed with God the Father.

God the Spirit does not get fatigued. But God in flesh, subjected willingly to the limitations of flesh, DOES get fatigued. His humanity needed a rest. And so do we. As believers and also as pastors.

It's ok to get away from the friends, companions, church, crowds, and work, and spend alone time with God the Father. In fact, it's more than ok, it's necessary. These are the healthy boundaries based on the actions and lifestyle of Jesus when He was on the earth.
He never ever neglected His ministry or calling, but He also ensured He rested and prayed and got personal recovery. There are many times like this in the Gospels. (Other examples: Luke 9:18; John 6:15)
I think the disciples might have wondered why Jesus would send them away. They were not just students or disciples or learners. They were His friends and companions. But here in Matthew 14:22, He sends them away. Then as He sends away His disciples, He dismisses the crowds, who were now satisfied and healed.
There must come a time in our day and/or our week when we realize we need a break, a time alone with God and ourselves. Self-neglect is not selflessness. Rather, Self-neglect is destructive. Don't neglect your personal rest and recovery time. Sometimes, as pastors, we must postpone it for a time. But It will come.
As we selflessly seek God's Kingdom and ask for it to expand on earth, and serve God's people in God's calling, God will always be faithful to provide you with openings for personal rest and recovery. Discover them and take them as you need them. Jesus was fully God and fully human. We should take notes on how Jesus balanced rest with work.
My take-away from this passage in Matthew 14:10-23 is this:

Jesus did not neglect His rest and recovery periods, He briefly postponed it at times out of compassion for the lost and the sick and the brokenhearted. But such postponement was not the norm and we should, if possible get into a daily or weekly routine which includes rest and recovery. God is a God of recovery. God the Father Himself rested on the seventh day, after creating Heaven and Earth. God, who does not get tired, CHOSE to rest. Let that minister to you.
We need to choose to rest. YES that might sometimes mean saying no to certain activities or outings or invitations with friends. Those friends may not understand. Just plan to re-schedule at a different time and place.

Now of course, resting does not mean being lazy and doing nothing all the time. But I never struggled with being outright lazy. I struggled finding time to rest in a busy bivocational schedule like mine.  Sometimes I still struggle. But now, I am getting better at choosing to rest. Rest makes ministry and other forms of work more enjoyable!
Middle age has made it a necessity for me as my body is not quite as energetic as it used to be. Physically and mentally, I am healthy and strong thank God, but we are not meant to just keep working all the time.
AND,  I am blessed that I now have a lovely and godly wife, Jenny, who helps me and ministers to my needs (and I minister to her needs also). She recognizes how hard I work, even when I don't see it myself. She supports my work and also encourages me to rest at the right time.
Ultimately God gives us opportunities to rest, but it's up to us to recognize them. Jesus is calling:

Matthew 11:29-30
New King James Version
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Learn to accept God's invitation to rest. Get regular intervals of rest with Jesus. Learn to recognize the time to postpone rest, and also the time NOT to postpone it. God's Love and compassion toward people will be your motive in postponing your rest on occasion (Like Jesus). Just understand that postponement is meant to be temporary.
Blessed rest will always come to to all those who come to Jesus and choose to abide in Him.

When balanced with the work of the ministry, the call God placed on you, rest is just as productive as work!  Work will be more productive when you find rest for your soul (mind, will, emotions) in Jesus!
God bless,

Pastor Curtis

Seasonal Changes Can Help Us Grow

The transition can be a challenge or it can go smoothly. Either way, seasons do change and we must learn how to adapt and adjust to the shift in the seasons.

I was single for 13 years until I got married in June this year, 2022. I met my current wife, Jenny in 2020. This relationship is a blessing and an amazing match by the Lord Jesus.
We believe God helped us. I am now married to an amazing and sincere Christian woman who is serious about following Jesus and supporting me in my pastoral ministry at Church On The GO.
It is my story of loss and now, recovery. I once was abandoned by a former wife who wore a "Christian" mask but was not a true follower in practice. I was faithful to the end, but she cared about education, not me. She certainly didn't care about the Lord. (Education worship = Eating from The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil- sounds familiar right? See Genesis chapter 3.)
I spent years healing from divorce due to being abandoned. Divorce is a serious type of loss, similar to the death of a loved one. Then God got me focused on ministering to other singles, especially those who were brokenhearted and abandoned/divorced. I was already an assistant pastor at Church On The GO. But I then added a new aspect to my ministry at the lead pastor's request: ministry to Christian adult (18+) singles once a month. I decided to call it Christian Singles On The GO. My first meeting was in July 2014.

I started teaching discipleship to our church's singles and showing that both marriage and singleness are valid ministry gifts when harnessed by the Lord and guided by the Holy Spirit. See 1 Corinthians chapter 7. And I taught Ecclesiastes chapter 3- God works in seasons on the earth. If it is on earth, it is subject to seasons: literal seasons or circumstantial seasons or spiritual seasons. And marriage and singleness are both seasons. Those who never get married may think this is not a season.... but your whole life on earth is still just a season. Only heaven is eternal.
Now around Februrary 2022, as the time for my marriage drew near, our leaders felt I should still lead the singles group. The only difference is that I added an extension to the title: PLUS LOSS AND RECOVERY. My marriage to Jenny is my story of recovery. This is my season of recovery.

And seasons change to help us grow. And marriage is helping me flourish.

My example, by God's grace and Spirit, serves to show singles what God can do in a faithful person's life if they only trust the Lord and obey Him and submit to His process of recovery. Not that all singles need to get married. I make that clear to our people. Recovery is a lot more than just relationships. God recovers our spirit and our soul through salvation and our life and our health and many other things, not just relationships. The most important thing God wants to recover is our relationship to HIM! Only through Jesus! (See John 14:6). Be reconciled to God through Christ! (See 2 Cor. 5:20-21)

So I am now a married man involved in a variety of ministry and marketplace vocational  activities: this includes leading our monthly singles group. My marriage shows that God is a God of recovery and He knows best when to change the seasons in our circumstances.
When your seasons change, be ready to do things differently from then on. That season could be a new job. A new friend. A new church. A new volunteer position. A new ministry at church, etc. OR it could be a new marriage, as in my case. No matter the change you are experiencing, be ready to go with the Holy Spirit and be flexible to Him. His leading is always right and you are going to experience some growing pains even if they are only minor. Such changes help us grow. God often changes a situation when we need to grow.
And of course, seasons change when we make choices. You must agree to take on the job, or the relationship or the new ministry role. It is your choice. And yet, it is still God working all things for GOOD for those who love Him and are called by Him. (See Romans 8:28)

What works in one season will not always work in the next. For instance, going back to marriage and singleness: both are equally valuable gifts. Jesus and Paul and Jeremiah all made use of singleness on the earth, to advance God's Kingdom in the Bible. They did so in a way that works best when they remain unmarried.
But now that I am married I am adjusting to a married lifestyle, blessed in new and different ways. I was blessed as a single. Now I am blessed as a married man.
I am adapting over time to new routines and patterns where both me and my wife accommodate each other with kindness and understanding.

I hope this encourages you to always trust in Jesus Christ as King and Lord and Saviour. He will guide and shift your seasons and circumstances according to His calling on your life!

1 Corinthians 7:17 NKJV
17 But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.

VISION: The MOUNTAIN above Canada

Vision: Mountain and Flood over Canada.
A couple of months ago I received a spiritual, symbolic vision from the Lord Jesus Christ.

I was at church praying in our prayer service and the Lord suddenly showed me the whole map of Canada, slowly being submerged under water. Then I saw a mountain above Canada, and it was most impressive. It was small at first, but kept growing as it needed to, and it could be reached from any place within Canada (or from anyplace in the world for that matter).
All the valleys were flooded out and even Canada's tallest natural mountain, Mount Logan in the Yukon at a massive 5,956m above sea level was eventually dwarfed by this gigantic mountain.

The Mountain I saw was never submerged. It was hovering above Canada, much like the crown is hovering at the top of Canada's coat of arms (see picture below). And all who were willing, went UP to the Mountain.
I figured now was the right time to share this since in the last day or two, there has been significant natural flooding in part of Southern Ontario.
http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/grand-valley-grca-grand-river-conservation-authority-kitchener-storm-1.4174860
This is sad news for the Kitchener area, and I pray for those affected to be restored. May they cry out to the one true God, Jesus Christ. One of the towns affected was Grand Valley... near the Grand River. This natural event matches the spiritual vision I had a few months back: I had seen the "valleys of Canada" flooded in the spirit, several months ago. And now, we see here an actual town named Grand Valley being literally flooded.

I don't believe in coincidences. I feel the Lord is trying to get our attention.

Isaiah 59:19 (GENEVA)
So shall they fear [respect] the Name of the Lord from the West, and his glory from the rising of the Sun; for the enemy shall come like a flood; but the Spirit of the Lord shall chase him away.

Isaiah 59:19 (KJV)So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.

On Canada's coat of arms one latin phrase reads "Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam" on the round red ribbon in the center, around the shield. That's Latin for "They desire a better country". That phrase comes from the Bible and was added to our coat of arms in 1994.

Canada's Coat of Arms (above) has two phrases from the Holy Bible on it, in Latin

Here is the original text that Canadian officials drew from:
Hebrews 11:16 English Standard Version (ESV)
16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

So if we keep reading the book of Hebrews we learn that The Heavenly Country is Mount Zion, also known as the Heavenly Jerusalem (not the earthly Jerusalem):
Hebrews 12:22-25
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

So the question is: are YOU enrolled in heaven? Are you going up to the MOUNTAIN of the LORD? You can do it right NOW! You can access New Jerusalem from wherever you are, by entering the Door, JESUS CHRIST!
Jesus declared:
John 10:9 English Standard Version (ESV)
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

Don't wait. Ask Jesus and enter into His kingdom right now. He LOVES you and wants you to live forever. He paid for your sins (shortcomings and lawless deeds) on the cross. He died and rose again, to save you! Enter today... access the mountain... go on UP! You reach the heavenly, better country, the New Jerusalem! It is eternal, and your citizenship is attainable TODAY. You get your passport and citizenship through Jesus, the DOOR. Citizenship is attainable as SOON as you apply! If you don't repent, sin will flood you out. You will be forever separated from God in hell. But God does not want that. He wants you to change your ways (repent) and head into the door, Jesus Christ! No matter what your past was, it can be washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. You can be clean. In Christ, you are IMMEDIATELY ELIGIBLE for citizenship in The New Jerusalem!! Just believe in Jesus.
And finally, God is allowing a different kind of flood into Canada, not a natural one. He is allowing adversity to flood our valleys. He wants us to head UP.... out of our comfort zones... out of our complacency, out of our low perspective, out of sin, out of compromised truth, and out of hiding. God is calling us UP through Christ...
INTO His City,
INTO His country,
INTO His right living
INTO His faith
INTO His Salvation
INTO The truth
INTO His love
INTO a place of true security that no disaster or false belief can touch
INTO eternal life.
I do not believe my vision is to be taken literally, but as a spiritual symbol of what the Lord wants for Canada in 2017. It is time to GO UP GOD's MOUNTAIN! God is allowing the spiritual flood of opposition to cause discomfort in the valley and to cause us to rise up in prayer and in obedience to Christ's Call and great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20).
Our lead pastor, Rev. Steve Coates recently preached at Church On The GO about this passage in Micah 4, and it really resonated with what the Lord had shown me in this vision:

Micah 4:1-5 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Mountain of the Lord
1 It shall come to pass in the latter days
that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and it shall be lifted up above the hills;
and peoples shall flow to it,
2 and many nations shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord
,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
3 He shall judge between many peoples,
and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war anymore;
4 but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,
and no one shall make them afraid,
for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.
5 For all the peoples walk
each in the name of its god,
but we will walk in the name of the Lord our Godforever and ever.

John 8:58 English Standard Version (ESV)
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”

Let's go up to Heavenly Zion, like Micah 4:2 declares! Let's get our Heavenly citizenship... through Jesus. Canada, it's time to rise up, go up, take the highest ground! Jesus is calling. Canada has become a place like Micah 4:5... a place of many gods and there is confusion and disagreement on ground level. But we can choose to walk in the name of the LORD our GOD (v5).

What is the Name of the Lord God?
Philippians 2:10
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Our Canadian heritage is about desiring a better country. It's on our coat of arms. And now, that coat of arms has been restored to the brand new $10 bill. I recently had the chance to look at it. So the Word of God is on our new bills, and it's on our coat of arms, in Latin... both Psalm 72:8 (from sea to sea) and Hebrews 11:16 (they desire a better country).

Let's go up to the Better Country, New Jerusalem! Jesus is the Door!
Blessings

Waiting Does Not Mean Wasting Time

I came across this meme on social media tonight:

I think it is good. I would, however like to clarify what "waiting" is about in this context.
Keep in mind I have not remarried yet in almost 7 years. I have had no steady relationships in that time since I was abandoned, and my first marriage ended. Yet I am really involved with ministry more and more. My miracle ministry that survived divorce has been preserved by the Lord. I am to teach and to preach and to minister in my local church. That is my privilege and honour. Whether I get married or not, this is my calling. It is the cross I bear. What is the cross you bear for Jesus?

So to this meme I say:
Yes of course waiting on God is important.
But... It is also important to position oneself for receiving. One must keep praying in Jesus' Name, and keep asking and keep seeking. It's not enough to just sit back and do nothing. When some people think of waiting they imagine themselves sitting in a doctors office, waiting to be called. No.
In this context, "waiting on God" means working for Him in your calling. It means you do not act outside His will, but you DO act according to His will. Waiting on God does not mean standing around doing nothing, wasting the gift of singleness. The more years one can get in doing the work of God, the better. Because once marriage comes, your time will be divided and you will have to please both The Lord and also your spouse. Believe me, that is no easy task.
(1 Cor. 7:32-33)

Wait on God by praying for your future spouse to come. Then ....get back to work! Serve Jesus. Spread the Gospel. Love one another in the churches. Serve God in the ministry you have. All Christians have a ministry. Be faithful.
Go all out for Jesus as a single. NOW is your time to serve and bless Him and bless others. You will never again have this THIS level of freedom to please the Lord. You will never again get this many options where you are free to make choices in Christ without considering a spouse's plans or feelings.

You have a commission. Serve God in it, and really press into your love relationship with Jesus Christ our God and Saviour. Don't think that waiting means wasting. Not a chance. Waiting means you position yourself thankfully and prayerfully, and then get busy and do what God called you for in ministry.
Yes, you keep putting yourself in position for meeting a special person. But your focus must remain on your calling. The only way you will ever know who to marry is by cultivating your calling in Christ. Jesus does not call us to marriage or singleness per se. He calls us to love Him, to spread His Gospel, and to die to self and follow Him. THAT is the call. In a word, the call is DISCIPLESHIP. And, regardless of your marital status, marriage cannot ever be more important than discipleship. And the geographic details of your call will vary from mine. Nevertheless, now is the day to serve God and worship Him and love Him.
Love those He puts in your path. Feed the sheep with the truth of Jesus Christ, who is the Bread of Heaven and the Living Water. In 1 Corinthians 7:7, Paul calls marriage and singleness "gifts". They are not the call, but gifts. The Call is always discipleship. And discipleship is always an individual experience before the Lord. Discipleship cannot be blocked by marriage or family or past or current condition. As you read through 1 Corinthians 7 you realize the key is not found in marriage OR singleness. The key is this,

1 Corinthians 7:171599 Geneva Bible (GNV)
17 But as God hath distributeth to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk: and so ordain I in all Churches.

Meme Commentary: Beware of Misguided well-meaning chain-posts in social meda.

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
-James 4:7, Holy Bible -English Standard Version

Beware of silly posts or misguided posts on social websites like twitter or facebook, even if they are well-meaning. There are a series of posters that prey upon people's superstitions. The classic chain letter, in digital format. There is no authority or truth to the superstition. The Bible clears it up for us as Spirit-filled, born-again Christians. But sadly, people still believe the superstitions out of fear or respect for that which is untrue. The big example is: "Share this post and you will be blessed." or "Share this post if you love your mother. Scroll past it if you don't". To think that reposting a picture online has any authority over your life is wrong and unbiblical. Here is an example which I have seen more than once:

The same poster is below, with my comments added. Click on it to see the whole thing:

Overcoming satan
Today I want to make a comment on the poster you see here. I found this on facebook and I see it being passed around. But I have something to say here:
True warfare against satan is when you don't just carry the bible or read it, but you understand it in the Holy Spirit and apply it with pointed prayer in the Spirit. Satan is not afraid of God's written word (read Luke 4). In fact he will try to twist it in your mind. So rightly dividing and discerning in Christ's Spirit are essential. The Bible says "RESIST" the devil and he will flee from you. Living out the instructions of the Bible is good, and needed, but it's a very broad statement. To be more specific, Biblically, it's only when you are purchased with the blood of Jesus and you suit up in God's Holy Spirit Armour and actually RESIST the devil, that he will flee from you.

And no, sharing this post does not defeat satan. Don't believe posters that say silly things like that. The Bible says, in Hebrews 2:14 that JESUS partook of flesh and blood and through death, He mightily DEFEATED the devil!

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; " Heb. 2:14 KJV
The devil is now wandering and trying to lie to as many as he can, to try and talk them out of being Christian overcomers by twisting scriptures with a satanic "if".

Luke 4:9-11 KJV "And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. "

Jesus repelled the devil by stating the Word of God correctly and living it in the HOLY SPIRIT. In other words, He RESISTED the devil:

Luke 4:12-13 KJV "And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season."
Once a Christian can become a Jesus-like overcomer, he knows that his previous and permanent defeat at the hands of King Jesus renders him powerless against the spiritually armoured and spiritually armed Christian. By the way, there was no "share" button or "social network website" to share on, 2000 years ago, just the powerful cleansing blood of Jesus. Only His blood has defeated satan.  Heb. 2:14 (KJV or Geneva version) says satan "had" the power of death, but not anymore! Jesus took it! JESUS now currently and permanently holds the Keys of hell and death, NOT satan (Rev. 1:18). Jesus is the Big One in charge. So suit up, read Ephesians 6 and other Bible passages, and get equipped in the Spirit! Be a mobilized, armoured, spiritually armed, man or woman of Christ. Be an Overcomer.

And please, don't repost supertitious chain-posts, even if they sound "Christian". Instead do like I did, and compare them against the actual Word of God. Ask the Holy Spirit for revelation in Jesus' name!
Be blessed in Jesus!

Prose on Pros

Prose on Pros:
I'm for life and marriage and the perfect timeless word of God.
I believe like the Peace Tower says, its righteousness that keeps the Canadian flagpole upright in the sod.
Pro-life, pro-one-man-one-woman-marriage, pro-senior, pro-children, pro-babies, pro-people, pro-repentance, pro-righteousness, pro-mercy, pro-God.
But to sum it all up and what I am for, it's more complete to say I'm pro-Jesus,
He will save us from east to west shore.
Us to the right Way, will He restore.
He is the example, the only One, who shows exactly what I am for.

Stand for Jesus, and you stand for what's right.

Peace At The Watercooler

This afternoon, I was feeding my guinea pigs, and I witnessed some wonderful behaviour. Now, just to fill you non-guinea pig owners in, guinea pigs are large rodents that tend thrive better if they live in groups. They always establish a social order for their herd and they always establish a leader. I have 2 males Ashton and Gobi, and 3 females, Bungee, Aggie, and Sahara. The males live in a large 6 foot by 2 foot pen, and the females live in their own pen, of the same size.

I just stood and watched, as they took turns at the water bottle. Ash is the dominant one in the male pen. Ash was getting a drink at the water bottle, when Gobi cut in to get a looooong drink. But Ash just watched and waited patiently. He could have used his authority to shoo him away, but he just waited instead. When Gobi was done, Ash calmly went up to finish his own drink of water.

I then looked to the female pen, in the same room, and saw the exact same thing happening there. Bungee is the leader there and she was getting a drink. I have 3 girls, so I use two water bottles in their cage. But Aggie wanted to use the one Bungee was at (for some funny reason... guinea pigs can be like that). So Bungee let Aggie in, and watched over her as she got her drink. Then, when Aggie was finished, Bungee finished her own drink. It was deja-vu. I think when something like this happens twice in a row, the Lord wants me to take note.

I find it remarkable how civilized these little guinea pigs are, and that the same example would happen twice in a single moment, first with the males and then with the females! If they don't fight at the "water cooler", why can't we honour each other as well at home, work and church?

I asked myself, why can't we be like these little creatures? There is a little passage in the Bible that says:

"Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;"
Romans 12:10-11 King James Version

In verse 13 it says we should be "given to hospitality". I feel that respect for each other is important and that we should honour others by preferring them. This does not mean favourtism, but it means letting people in at the traffic light, sharing your snack in the lunch room, or holding a door for a stranger. That word "prefer", in the original ancient Greek, means "to lead the way for others, show deference."
Well, that means that if we are in charge of something or if we lead someone, we lead by example. I saw that Ash and Bungee, as simple as it was, were leading by showing deference. Not bad for a 2 pound rodent.

How do I get this from guinea pigs you ask? Well, by living with them , watching them, and letting the Lord speak to me when He wants to say something. Most people who do not own guinea pigs may not fully understand what I am sharing here, but it is a simple example that we should learn from. Share and be patient with each other.

Let's stop all the fuss around the watercooler at work and live at peace, with Jesus in our hearts!

Thank God for Mirrors!

I wake up in the morning, head towards the bathroom, get ready for my job in retail... and as I am getting ready to head out I look in the mirror and- Woah.... is that my HAIR? Immediately I break out the gel and the comb and try to tame it. Or, I could just walk away and forget about it. But then, for the rest of my day, my coworkers will mercilessly call me "Beaker" from the Muppet Show.

Falling to an even worse fate, are those who look into God's word, but forget what it says about Him or themselves. James in the New Testament describes the Scriptures as a mirror.

He wrote:

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing."
-James 1:22-25, English Standard Version

It says that you are deceiving yourself, if you think that Christianity is all about hearing. You are saved only by believing and confessing Jesus (simple faith). This confessed faith in Jesus is the only way to be a child of God. But fathers expect their children to be obedient. They love their children. The Heavenly Father loves His children so much, that He develops and grows us using discipline, reassurance, and devotion. All these things are part of Father's love for us. So we as God's children in Christ need to listen to Him, and do what He asks of us.

You can hear the preacher and read the word and talk all you want - but until you act, your words and hearing are fruitless. Jesus desires a people that are just like Him. Did you notice what it says in verse 24 above? It says that the man forgets "what he was like". Well, I don't ever want to forget about being like Jesus! The word helps us learn what Jesus is like and the Spirit helps us become more like Him!

"For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers" Romans 8:29 ESV

This verse tells us that God knows the ones who will respond to His grace and call. Those who do respond are the ones he plans to be made into the image of Jesus His Son! God wants His son Jesus to have lots of siblings! Us!

So if we read the word - and say "yes that's who Jesus is, and I'm to be like Him"- great. But, will you remember it- and do it? He wants you to trust His Holy Spirit to make the changes in you, as you cooperate with Him, so that when we look into the mirror of God's word, we no longer see ourselves, sinful and wicked. No, we will look at ourselves and only see the indwelling Spiritual presence of the pure and spotless lamb, Jesus Christ! For example Jesus tells us to bless those that curse us, so we should remember to do it the next time some guy cuts us off on the road. I am speaking to myself too. It's little things like this that the Spirit will remind us to do.

I may have survived as Beaker, but unless I remember to do what God says, things will truly get hairy.

Let's hope for this:
"...When he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."
1 John 3:2b,3 KJV

This "hope" John refers to is that "we shall be like him", like Jesus. I hope to be like Jesus, in character and quality. Do you? Then let's follow Him, and respond with cooperation to His directions!

Welcome to my Blog!

Welcome!
Thanks for clicking on my blog, Viewfinder and welcome! Here you will likely get to hear all kinds of thoughts I have on life, everything from Jesus and Scripture, to coffee and guinea pigs. If we were together in person, I might invite you to the nearest Tim Hortons for a cup of coffee (if you're not Canadian, that's a popular coffee shop for us Canucks.)

I used to have a website years ago called "Through the viewfinder" about my photographs. It was just a hobby site that no longer runs, but I decided to bring that title back again. This time, it has more meaning to me. Yes, as a photographer I look through viewfinders to take pictures.

The Prophet Got it Right
But, spiritually, I think the prophet Habakkuk got it right. He needed to find a new and higher point of view, when his world around him was crumbling. He got it right when he said:

" I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved." (Hab.2:1 KJV)

The Lord God was the One he was waiting on, and God did answer him. In verse 2 God tells Habakkuk to write the vision and make it plain (obvious) for others to read. What God shows me, I believe I am to write it also.

Canada's Tower Of Vision
And speaking of towers: Here in Canada, in the 1920's John Pearson designed the Peace Tower that now stands as a part of Ottawa's Center Block on Parliament Hill. This monument is a Canadian Icon, and is featured on the backs of our fifty and twenty dollar bills. It reaches a height of 92.2 m (302 feet and 6 inches). On three sides of the outside of this tower, are three verses right out of the Holy Bible. They are visible from the ground in raised stone lettering as you walk up to the tower. I was there to take pictures and research it in August of last year.

Two verses are from Psalm 72:1 and Psalm 72:8. The third face has a Bible verse from Proverbs 29:18:

"WHERE THERE IS NO VISION, THE PEOPLE PERISH"

This verse, plus the other two are held high above the ground. These verses exalt the Lord God, of the Christian Bible. The Prime Minister and all his cabinet, the opposition and their cabinet, and all the other parties form under this scripture.

Ours is a tower that declares vision, just like Habakkuk's verse! Let's pray that Jesus can be the Lord of this nation once again. Jesus has helped me find His view of things, by showing me His word. I hope to share some of it with you!

More to come...
